Why the tutorial still works

Every week, each of our students sits with a tutor and one or two classmates to defend an essay they wrote the night before. It is the heart of a Monceau education.

A lecture can be watched; a tutorial has to be lived. There is nowhere to hide, and that is precisely why students make such rapid progress.

Learning to argue well

Tutors do not give answers. They ask the next question, and the one after that, until students learn to test their own ideas before anyone else does.

The tutorials taught me to think, not just to answer.

Small by design

This is why we will never grow beyond four hundred students. The tutorial only works when every teacher knows every student well.
